Award of Diploma

You must meet all requirements for graduation to be awarded their diploma.

Diploma with Merit (DWM)

The DWM is awarded to the top graduates from each diploma course who have consistently shown outstanding performance throughout their course of study. To be eligible, you must be in the top 10% of the graduating cohort for your diploma course, without failing any of your modules during your course of study. Awardees are selected by the Assessment Board.

Director's List

Top students who excel academically in the semester in a full-time diploma are placed on the Director’s List. To be eligible, you must be in the top 15% of your cohort for the semester, while carrying a full study load (or at least 80% of a full study load if you have been granted credit transfer) and without failing any modules in that semester.

Candidature

You are allowed a maximum period of twice the normal duration of the course or one additional year, whichever is longer, to complete your course of study.

If you are in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), please note that the programme is designed to be completed within one academic year. Learners who are unable to complete the programme may be allowed to repeat the PFP for one additional year, subject to meeting the criteria under “Removal From Course of Study”. The maximum candidature for PFP is two years.

The maximum candidature allowed for students who have been granted credit transfer will be adjusted accordingly.

Learning Unit Distinction

To be eligible for learning unit distinction, you must have passed the learning unit with a Grade A in your first attempt.  The number of distinctions awarded for each learning unit is capped at not more than the top 5% of the number of students taking the learning unit.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Your GPA is computed using this formula:

GPA = Σ (Learning Unit Grade Point x Learning Unit Credit Value) / Σ (Learning Unit Credit Value) (include Learning Unit with Grade Point only)

For Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) learners, a PFP GPA will be computed. Your PFP GPA will be used as an important criterion for posting to your desired PET Diploma course after completing the programme. Your PFP GPA will not be carried over to your PET Diploma GPA.

Attendance (for learners enrolled in full-time PFP, common entry and diploma courses)

If your attendance in any learning unit drops below 75%, your grade in that learning unit will be capped at “D” (50 marks) with a corresponding 1.0 grade point, if you pass the learning unit.  Refer to NYP Attendance Policy for more details.

Attendance (for continuing education and training (CET) learners)

The NYP Attendance Policy for CET learners applies to learners who are enrolled in lifelong courses. Refer to NYP Attendance Policy for more details. (Learners who are using Skills Training and Enhancement Training Portal (STEP), please refer to the attendance policy in STEP under Student Resources.)

Award of Credit

Full credit is earned when you pass a learning unit. If you have sufficient and acceptable evidence of relevant previous study and/or training, you may be given credit transfer for appropriate learning units.

Withdrawal from Learning Unit

You may, with valid and acceptable reasons, be allowed to withdraw from one or more registered learning units during the semester. However, this must be done by week 8, day 5 of the semester. Learning unit withdrawals will not be allowed any later than that.

To apply for learning unit withdrawal, complete the withdrawal form and submit it to your Programme Manager/Course Administrator/Course Co-ordinator by week 8, day 5 of the semester.

Do continue to attend classes and sit for assessments until you’ve received notification that your application is successful.

 Repeating a Learning Unit

If you fail any core learning unit for the first time, you must repeat the learning unit.

If you fail any prescribed or complementary elective, you can either repeat the learning unit or register for another prescribed or complementary elective. You may repeat a prescribed or complementary elective up to a maximum of two times.

If you are in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), you will be offered a Supplementary Assessment (SA) only if you achieve a minimum score of 35% for a failed learning unit. You must take and pass the SA to be considered as having passed the learning unit. There is no repeating of a failed learning unit within the same PFP year.

Removal from Course of Study

You can be removed from your course of study if you:

- repeat and fail a core learning unit, or

- obtain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 0.8 for two consecutive semesters.

Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) learners who fail two or less learning units in any one semester (capped at a maximum of 3 failed learning units across both semesters) after completing all Supplementary Assessments (SA) will be eligible to repeat the PFP in the next academic year. If you repeat the PFP, you must take ALL the learning units, not just the ones you failed.

If you do not meet the above criteria, you will be removed from the PFP.

If you are repeating PFP for second time and fail any learning unit, you must pass the SA. If you do not pass the SA, you will be removed from the programme.

Absence from Assessment

If you are absent from any assessment including examination without a valid and acceptable reason, you are deemed to have sat and failed that assessment.

With effect from 25 Oct 2021, you are required to update your absence from classes and all assessments including examinations via the Statement of Absence (SOA) System, and submit the softcopy of the documentary proof within two (2) working days from the last day of the absence.

For all assessments, including examinations, learners must submit original ^hardcopy documentary proof within two (2) working days from their last absence date to their School’s administration office during office hours*. For other classes, e.g. lecture, tutorial, practical or laboratory, if learners are selected for ^hardcopy verification, learner must submit the original ^hardcopy documentary proof, including medical certificate, within the next two (2) working days from their last absence date to their School’s administration office during office hours*.

^If the documentary proof was issued in softcopy, hardcopy submissions would not be required.

*Office Hours
Monday to Thursday: 8:30am to 5.30pm
Friday: 8:30am to 5:00pm
(Closed on Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays)

Medical certificates must be endorsed by a medical practitioner registered with the Singapore Medical Council or a dental practitioner registered with the Singapore Dental Council, who should not be a family member. Medical certificates from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners are not accepted.

Submission of a valid medical certificate does not guarantee that you can sit for an alternative assessment under existing policy. Unless otherwise permitted, you will have only one attempt at passing the alternative assessment.

Appeal for Review of Semestral Assessment Results

You may appeal for a review of your assessment results within three working days from the day the assessment results are released by the polytechnic.

To make an appeal, please fill up the Appeal for Review of Semestral Assessment Results form. The administrative fee is $26.75 for each learning unit. There will be no refund of payment once you have submitted your request. This fee will be refunded only if your appeal is successful.

During the review, we will do a thorough check of the computation of marks. To maintain assessment fairness and consistency, there will be no re-marking of scripts, as scripts will need to be marked together with the rest of the class as part of our quality assurance process. You may make your appeal for more than one learning unit. However, please note that each learning unit can only be appealed once. You will be informed in writing if your grade(s) remain unchanged or have been revised.
